  • Erik Magnussen - The Quiet Precision of Danish Modernism

At Deszine Talks, the Erik Magnussen collection represents the more disciplined, architecturally resolved strain of Danish modernism — design that achieves its effects not through gesture or ornamentation, but through the exact calibration of proportion, material weight, and structural logic. Magnussen (born 1940) is one of Denmark’s most respected and least self-promoting designers: a figure whose work has furnished some of the most admired interiors in Scandinavia for over five decades, yet who remains less internationally celebrated than his influence deserves.

Born in Copenhagen, Magnussen trained at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied under some of the most rigorous teachers in the Danish furniture tradition. He graduated in 1960 and established his own design practice shortly after, taking on both product and interior commissions and developing a formal language that was distinctly his own spare without being cold, precise without being mechanical, and always rooted in a deep understanding of how people actually inhabit and move through space.

His long association with the manufacturer Engelbrechts one of Denmark’s most respected contract furniture producers gave Magnussen the industrial partnership he needed to realise his ideas at scale without compromising their resolution. Together they developed a series of seating and table systems that are still specified by architects and interior designers across Europe today, valued for their ability to integrate into both residential and commercial environments without demanding attention or creating visual friction.

Magnussen is also a ceramicist of considerable distinction his stackable coffee cup for Stelton (1976), with its distinctive conical form and removable base, became one of the most recognised objects in Danish design history. This breadth of practice — from furniture to product design to ceramics speaks to a designer who thinks in systems and principles rather than individual objects, and whose furniture carries the same systemic rigour that characterises his work across every medium.

    Signature Pieces in This Collection

    • EM Sofa - The EM Sofa is Magnussen’s most celebrated upholstered piece and one of the most architecturally resolved sofas in the Danish modern canon. Its defining characteristic is the relationship between the upholstered body and the slender steel or solid wood base: the cushions sit with a visual lightness that belies their generous depth, held in precise geometry by a frame whose proportions are calibrated to the millimetre. Available in leather or fabric, the EM Sofa works equally in a residential living room and a corporate reception space a dual suitability that is itself a measure of its formal authority. The back cushions are removable and reversible, extending the lifespan of the piece indefinitely.
    • EM Easy Chair - The companion to the EM Sofa, the Easy Chair shares the same frame geometry and upholstery specification while reducing the seating surface to the single-person scale. The result is a chair that reads as definitively modern no decorative elements, no exposed joinery flourishes, no historical references while remaining entirely comfortable for extended sitting. Its low profile and slender base make it visually lighter than its generous seat depth suggests, an effect Magnussen achieved through precise calibration of the seat height, cushion thickness, and base diameter. Equally effective as a singular accent chair or in multiples flanking a sofa.
    • Mosquito Chair (Model Z-down) - One of Magnussen’s most formally inventive pieces, the Mosquito Chair takes its name from the delicacy of its steel rod frame a structure so visually fine that the upholstered seat and back appear to float within it. The chair’s Z-shaped side profile achieved through a continuous bent steel rod that forms both the front leg and the backrest support in a single elegant line is a feat of structural economy that also produces one of the most distinctive silhouettes in Danish modern seating. Upholstered in leather or fabric, it is particularly effective in spaces where visual lightness is a priority: glass-walled offices, open-plan living areas, and interiors where the floor plane should remain as unobstructed as possible.
    • EM Stool - A direct formal extension of the EM seating family, the EM Stool applies the same frame geometry and upholstery discipline to a stool format usable as occasional seating, as a footrest beside the Easy Chair, or as a low surface within a living arrangement. Its slender base and taut upholstered top give it a presence disproportionate to its modest scale.
    • EM Table - Magnussen’s table designs share the formal vocabulary of his seating: slender steel legs, precise joinery at the frame corners, and tabletop materials solid wood, laminate, or glass specified for their visual weight relative to the base. The EM Table family encompasses dining, coffee, and side table formats, all resolved in the same disciplined language and designed to integrate without friction alongside the EM seating system or any other modernist furniture.
    • Cushions & Accessories - Leather and fabric cushions selected to complement the precise upholstery geometry of Magnussen’s frames adding softness and seasonal warmth without disrupting the visual discipline that defines every piece in this collection.

    The Discipline of Visual Lightness

The defining quality of Magnussen’s furniture the thing that makes it immediately recognisable and consistently specifiable across decades of changing interior fashion is its visual lightness. This is not achieved through thinness or fragility. Magnussen’s frames are structurally robust, his upholstery is thick and supportive, and his materials are chosen for longevity rather than economy. The lightness is a perceptual quality: it comes from the precise relationship between the mass of the upholstered body and the slenderness of the base, from the careful control of seat height and cushion overhang, and from the absence of any decorative element that would add visual weight without structural justification.

This is a quality that becomes increasingly valuable the more densely a space is furnished. A Magnussen sofa or chair does not compete with the other elements of a room for visual priority it participates, quietly and confidently, in whatever composition the room presents. This is why his pieces work so consistently well in both residential and contract environments: they have been calibrated to coexist rather than dominate.

His material choices reinforce this philosophy. Steel frames are specified in matte or satin finishes that absorb rather than reflect light. Leather upholstery is chosen in mid-toned naturals cognac, bark, graphite that read as neither bright nor dark against a range of wall and floor finishes. Wood bases are finished in clear oil or soap, allowing the grain to show without the high-gloss reflectivity that would make the base visually competitive with the upholstered shell above it.

Why Deszine Talks for Erik Magnussen?

    • ✓ True to Magnussen’s formal language slender frames, precise proportions, no decorative excess
    • ✓ Premium leather and fabric upholstery in the mid-toned naturals Magnussen consistently specified
    • ✓ Steel and solid wood bases finished in matte or satin never high-gloss
    • ✓ Reversible and replaceable cushion construction for multi-decade longevity
    • ✓ Suitable for residential, hospitality, and contract office environments

How to Style Erik Magnussen in Your Interior

The EM Sofa and Easy Chair are most effective in open-plan spaces where their slender bases can be seen fully floating above the floor plane rather than sitting flush against a wall. Ground the arrangement with a Carpet in a natural flatwoven fibre to anchor the composition without adding visual weight. The Mosquito Chair works particularly well in pairs at a Study Table or beside a window, where its wire frame reads against the light with particular delicacy.

Add Leather Cushions in a complementary tone for warmth and softness, and layer with Fabric Cushions for seasonal flexibility. A Mirror on an adjacent wall will amplify the spatial openness that Magnussen’s slender frames create, extending the perception of depth in any room. Complete the floor layer with a Bench in a compatible wood finish to bridge the Magnussen arrangement with the broader interior.

  • Pillow kit for Erik Ole Jørgensen. Couch sofa, model J148 (4) - Deszine Talks

Erik Ole Jørgensen - The Sculptor of the Danish Easy Chair

At Deszine Talks, the Erik Ole Jørgensen collection stands for a strand of Danish modernism that trusted the organic form absolutely furniture that begins not from a grid or a structural diagram but from the body itself, from the natural posture of a person at rest, and from the visual pleasure of a silhouette that could stand alone as sculpture. Jørgensen (born 1931) is one of the most formally inventive figures in the entire history of Danish furniture design, and one of the least imitated: his work is too specific, too fully resolved, and too demanding in its upholstery to be easily approximated.

Born in Denmark, Jørgensen trained as an upholsterer before establishing his own design and manufacturing company in Svendborg in 1954. This background was decisive. Unlike designers who drew forms and handed them to craftsmen to interpret, Jørgensen understood upholstery from the inside out he knew exactly what a foam pad or a spring system could and could not achieve, and he used that knowledge to push upholstered furniture into formal territory that no other designer had explored. His chairs are not frames with cushions applied to them. They are forms conceived as unified wholes, in which the upholstery is the structure and the structure is the upholstery.

His company, Erik Ole Jørgensen Møbelfabrik, became one of the most respected small furniture manufacturers in Denmark a producer whose commitment to handcrafted upholstery quality was absolute and whose catalogue, though never large, contained some of the most technically demanding pieces in the Danish modern tradition. The company continues today under the name EJ Furniture, still producing Jørgensen’s original designs alongside a carefully selected range of work by other Danish designers, all made in Denmark and all upholstered by hand.

His international recognition came most decisively through his relationship with the architect and designer Poul Volther, whose Corona Chair Jørgensen manufactured with such technical mastery that the two names became inseparable in the minds of collectors and designers worldwide. But Jørgensen’s own designs the Ox Chair above all are the fullest expression of his vision: furniture that is simultaneously architecturally bold, visually dramatic, and profoundly comfortable to sit in.

    Signature Pieces in This Collection

    • EJ 100 Ox Chair & Ottoman - Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960 and manufactured by Erik Ole Jørgensen, the Ox Chair is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the history of 20th-century design. Its name comes unmistakably from the two horn-like protrusions of the high backrest a formal decision that was entirely without precedent and has never been replicated without reference to Wegner’s original. The chair’s body is a single, continuous upholstered shell that rises from the seat through the back and into the two “horns”, supported on a four-legged chrome or matt steel base. The upholstery — in leather, fabric, or a combination — must be shaped over a complex foam substructure that only the most skilled upholsterers can execute correctly: a technical demand that is itself a testament to the manufacturing excellence of Jørgensen’s atelier. The matching Ottoman completes one of the most resolved and arresting lounge chair statements in the modernist canon. A genuine icon and an investment of the highest order.
    • EJ 20 Corona Chair - Designed by Poul Volther in 1961 and manufactured by Erik Ole Jørgensen with extraordinary technical precision, the Corona Chair is among the most structurally complex upholstered chairs ever produced. Its four crescent-shaped cushion elements each independently mounted on a central swivel base create a form that appears almost impossibly light, as though the cushions are orbiting a gravitational centre rather than resting on a frame. The name refers to the corona of the sun, and the analogy is not merely poetic: the chair genuinely appears to radiate outward from its base. Available in leather or fabric across a wide palette, the Corona Chair is as visually effective in a contemporary minimal interior as it was in the space-age context of its creation.
    • EJ 45 Falcon Chair - Designed by Sigurd Ressell in 1971 and produced by Erik Ole Jørgensen, the Falcon Chair takes its name from the spread-winged posture of its dramatically reclined seat and backrest. The upholstered shell divided into four separately upholstered sections is mounted on a V-shaped chrome or black steel base that elevates the seat to a height that encourages a deeply reclined sitting position. The Falcon is a chair designed for total relaxation: its geometry makes upright sitting almost impossible and deep, legs-extended lounging almost inevitable. In leather, it is a particularly dramatic presence dark, architectural, and unmistakable from across a room.
    • EJ 315 Amoebe Sofa - Jørgensen’s own sofa design, the Amoebe, takes its name from the amoeba the single-celled organism whose defining characteristic is its lack of fixed form, its capacity to extend and contract and reshape itself in response to its environment. The Amoebe Sofa applies this logic to upholstered seating: its profile is fluid and irregular, with a high wrap-around backrest that curves and dips in a continuous organic movement. No two viewing angles produce the same silhouette. The result is a sofa that is simultaneously dramatic as a room statement and genuinely enveloping as a seating experience. Available in leather and fabric.
    • EJ 50 Tub Chair - A more contained, architecturally disciplined piece within the Jørgensen catalogue, the Tub Chair wraps its upholstered backrest continuously around the seat in a low, rounded form that is equally effective as a singular accent chair, a hotel lobby statement, or a compact reading chair in a private home. Its lower visual profile makes it more versatile than the Ox or Corona in tightly furnished spaces, without sacrificing any of the upholstery quality that defines every piece in the Jørgensen range.
    • Cushions & Accessories - Premium leather and fabric cushions selected to complement the organic upholstery geometry and rich material palette of Jørgensen’s pieces adding warmth and seasonal softness without disrupting the sculptural integrity of each design.

    The Upholstery Is the Architecture

The defining quality of every piece in this collection and the quality that makes Jørgensen’s work so difficult to replicate at lower price points is the inseparability of form and upholstery. In most furniture, the upholstery is applied to a frame: it can, in principle, be removed and the frame will remain coherent. In Jørgensen’s pieces, this is not the case. The Ox Chair’s horns, the Corona Chair’s orbiting crescents, the Falcon Chair’s spread wings these forms exist only because of the upholstery’s ability to hold a three-dimensional shape over a precision-engineered foam and spring substructure. Remove the upholstery and there is no chair only an armature.

This means that the quality of the upholstery work is not a secondary consideration but the primary one. Jørgensen’s Svendborg atelier employs upholsterers whose training measured in years, not months enables them to achieve the precise surface tension, the exact corner radii, and the seamless transitions between adjacent upholstered panels that these pieces require. The leather hides used are selected individually for grain consistency across the full surface area of each chair: a single Ox Chair may require matching sections from two or three separate hides to achieve the visual unity that the design demands.

The foam formulations used in Jørgensen’s pieces are specified for long-term resilience they are designed to retain their density and shape over decades of use, rather than the months that economy foam manages. This is furniture that is genuinely built to last, in the fullest sense: not merely structurally durable but sensorially consistent over a lifetime of sitting.

How to Style Erik Ole Jørgensen in Your Interior

The Ox Chair and Corona Chair are both room-defining statement pieces each demands space to be read in full and rewards generous clearance on all sides. Position the Ox Chair as a solitary anchor at the end of a living arrangement, with at least 80cm of clearance behind the horns and to each side. Ground the composition with a Carpet in a natural, undyed flatweave that does not compete with the chair’s silhouette, and balance with a low Sofa in a complementary leather tone on the opposite axis.

The Falcon Chair works particularly well in a corner or beside a floor-to-ceiling window, where its reclined geometry reads as a deliberate invitation to rest rather than a spatial intrusion. Layer with Leather Cushions in a complementary tone and add a Fabric Cushion for tactile contrast. A Mirror on an adjacent wall will reflect the sculptural profile of any Jørgensen piece with particular effect, amplifying its formal presence without adding material weight. Introduce a Bench or low side surface to anchor the Ottoman in relation to the broader room composition.

  • Hans J. Wegner - The Greatest Chair Maker of the 20th Century

At Deszine Talks, the Hans J. Wegner collection occupies a position of singular authority. No designer in the history of furniture not Eames, not Jacobsen, not Breuer devoted a comparable creative life to the single form of the chair. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Wegner (1914–2007) designed more than five hundred chairs, of which perhaps fifty are genuine masterworks. Every piece in this collection is among them. Each one represents a different investigation of the same fundamental question: what is the irreducible minimum of a chair the fewest elements, the simplest joints, the most direct relationship between material and form that can produce an object of lasting beauty and genuine comfort?

Born in Tønder in southern Jutland in 1914, Wegner trained as a cabinetmaker not as an architect or a graphic designer, as many of his contemporaries did, but as a craftsman who understood wood at the level of the tool edge and the grain direction. He apprenticed with a local cabinetmaker at fourteen, completed his journeyman’s examination at seventeen, and spent the years before the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts working in workshops and absorbing the physical intelligence of furniture making that no formal education alone can transmit. This grounding was everything. It meant that every line Wegner drew was a line that could be cut, every joint he specified was one he had made himself, and every curve he proposed was one he understood in three dimensions before it existed on paper.

His career accelerated in the 1940s, when his collaboration with cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen produced the first of the chairs that would define his reputation. The Round Chair later known simply as “The Chair” after its appearance on American television during the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate  was completed in 1949 and remains, by almost any measure, the most perfectly resolved chair ever made. Its continuous back rail, its hand-shaped seat, its four hand-turned legs and the precise geometry of their junction at the seat frame: every element is essential, none is decorative, and the whole achieves a formal perfection that has not been improved upon in the seventy-five years since its creation.

Wegner was not a designer who rested on canonical achievements. The Wishbone Chair came in 1950, the Shell Chair in 1963, the Ox Chair produced by Erik Ole Jørgensen in 1960. Each was a fresh investigation, a new set of constraints, a different material or manufacturing context. He worked with solid wood, moulded plywood, cane, paper cord, leather, steel, and combinations of all of them. He worked with Carl Hansen & Søn, PP Møbler, Fritz Hansen, and Erik Ole Jørgensen. He was restless, exacting, and consistently extraordinary across a span of creative productivity that has no parallel in the history of furniture design.

    Signature Pieces in This Collection

    • CH24 Wishbone Chair - Designed in 1950 for Carl Hansen & Søn and in continuous production ever since, the Wishbone is the most produced chair in Danish furniture history and the most immediately recognisable. Its name comes from the Y-shaped back support a single bent steam-formed element that forks from the continuous back rail and meets the seat frame in a joint of extraordinary elegance. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord, a material Wegner chose for its tactile warmth, its breathability, and its ability to distribute pressure evenly across a wide surface area. Each Wishbone seat requires approximately 120 metres of paper cord, hand-woven by a single craftsperson in a process that takes several hours. Available in a wide range of wood species and lacquer finishes, and in natural or coloured paper cord. An essential foundation for any dining arrangement or considered interior.
    • PP501 / PP503 The Round Chair (“The Chair”) - Designed in 1949 for cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen and now produced by PP Møbler, the Round Chair is the most celebrated object in the entire Danish furniture tradition. Its continuous curved back rail steam-formed and hand-shaped from solid wood sweeps from armrest to armrest in a single unbroken line, supported by three turned spindles and meeting the seat in a joint so precisely fitted that no gap is visible or permissible. The seat is hand-carved from a solid plank the process takes a skilled craftsperson several hours and is either left in natural wood or fitted with a leather cushion. PP501 has an open woven seat; PP503 has an upholstered seat cushion. In 1960, this chair appeared on American national television during the Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate, its formal authority so unmistakable that an American design magazine subsequently named it simply “The Chair”. It has not been renamed since.
    • CH07 Shell Chair - Designed in 1963 and one of the most technically demanding chairs in the Carl Hansen & Søn catalogue, the Shell Chair uses a moulded plywood technique to produce a seat-and-backrest shell of extraordinary organic fluidity. The shell made from layers of fine wood veneer cold-pressed in a mould is supported on four solid wood legs at angles that give the chair a slightly hovering, airborne quality. Its low, wide seat and gently cupped back make it one of the most naturally comfortable chairs in the Wegner canon for extended sitting, and its relatively low profile gives it a visual lightness that belies the complexity of its construction.
    • EJ 100 Ox Chair & Ottoman - Designed in 1960 and produced by Erik Ole Jørgensen, the Ox Chair is Wegner’s most dramatic departure from his characteristic vocabulary of solid wood and joinery. Here the material is upholstery leather over a precision-engineered foam and steel substructure and the form is the most architecturally assertive of his career: two horn-like projections rising from a high backrest that give the chair a silhouette unlike any other object in the history of design. The Ox Chair demonstrates that Wegner’s formal intelligence was not medium-specific: he could apply the same investigative rigour to an upholstered shell that he applied to a dovetail joint or a steam-formed back rail.
    • AP19 / AP20 Papa Bear Chair & Ottoman - Designed in 1951 and produced by AP Stolen, the Papa Bear is Wegner’s most overtly warm and domestic piece a large, generously upholstered armchair with a solid wood frame, broad armrests, and a wrap-around backrest that envelops the sitter in the way that its name suggests. In fabric or leather, with a matching Ottoman, it is one of the most resolved and inviting lounge chair statements in the Danish modern canon: a piece that communicates comfort before the sitter has even lowered themselves into it.
    • CH88 / CH88T Dining Chair - A later Wegner design, produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, the CH88 distils his formal language to its most essential elements: a solid wood frame with a gently curved backrest, a flat or upholstered seat, and four tapered legs whose junction with the seat frame is handled with the joint precision that characterises all of his work at every scale. Available in a wide range of wood finishes and with optional seat upholstery in leather or fabric, the CH88 is equally effective as a dining chair or a desk chair and represents one of the most versatile and well-resolved pieces in the contemporary Carl Hansen catalogue.
    • Cushions & Accessories - Seat pads and cushions in leather and natural fabric selected to complement the wood tones and joinery language of Wegner’s chairs adding warmth and seasonal comfort without obscuring the formal clarity that each design demands.

Joinery as the Visible Language of Furniture

Wegner’s furniture is distinguished above all by the visibility and honesty of its construction. Where many designers concealed their joints hiding the mechanics of assembly behind veneers, plugs, or decorative elements Wegner made his joints the centre of the design. The junction of the Round Chair’s back rail with its spindles and seat frame is not merely structurally sound; it is the most beautiful part of the chair. The Wishbone Chair’s Y-back is not a decorative addition to a structural frame; it is the structural frame, shaped into its most elegant possible form. Every joint is an argument: this is how wood can be joined, and this is the most beautiful way to do it.

This approach demanded a level of craftsmanship that could not be industrialised without loss. PP Møbler, which produces many of Wegner’s most celebrated designs, employs craftspeople whose training in traditional Danish cabinetmaking techniques enables them to achieve the hand-fitted joint tolerances that Wegner’s drawings specified. A Round Chair seat is hand-carved from a solid plank; a Wishbone seat is hand-woven by a single craftsperson. These are not affectations of a heritage brand they are the only manufacturing methods by which the formal qualities of these pieces can be achieved.

The wood species Wegner worked with oak, cherry, walnut, beech, ash were chosen for their specific structural and aesthetic properties. Oak’s open grain and warm tone; cherry’s tight, even surface and the rich reddish-brown it develops with age; walnut’s depth and contrast. Each species has a character, and Wegner’s designs were calibrated to that character not interchangeable across materials but specifically resolved for each.

Why Deszine Talks for Hans J. Wegner?

    • ✓ Hand-woven paper cord seats each requiring ≈120m of cord and several hours of skilled hand-weaving

How to Style Hans J. Wegner in Your Interior

The Wishbone Chair is the most versatile piece in this collection use it in multiples of four, six, or eight around a dining table, mixing wood finishes or paper cord colours for the kind of considered eclecticism that reflects Wegner’s own belief in variety within coherence. Pair with a wide-plank oak table and ground with a Carpet in a natural flatwoven wool. Add Wishbone Chair Cushions for dining comfort without obscuring the paper cord seat.

The Round Chair and Papa Bear deserve positions of singular prominence each as the primary chair in a reading or reception arrangement, with clear sightlines and generous clearance. Anchor with a low Sofa and introduce a Study Table or side surface to complete the functional layer. Layer Leather Cushions on the Papa Bear for added warmth, and finish with a Mirror to reflect the warm wood tones of any Wegner composition.

    • Both sets share - the same precision fit, the same price (2,499 DKK), and the same commitment to material quality and long-term durability.

About the Hans J. Wegner J16 Rocking Chair

Hans J. Wegner is one of the most celebrated figures in Danish furniture design a trained cabinetmaker who elevated the chair to an art form. The J16 Rocking Chair exemplifies his belief that true comfort is a natural outcome of craftsmanship: fluid curves, solid wood construction, and a rocking geometry that adapts naturally to the body.

Designed in the mid-20th century and produced by FDB Møbler, the J16 brings the meditative quality of a rocking chair into the Scandinavian design tradition a piece for living rooms, reading nooks, nurseries, and any space that deserves both beauty and quiet motion. The chair’s wooden frame is built to last decades; the cushions are the element that benefits most from careful selection.

  • Jørgen Bækmark - The Quiet Conscience of Danish Furniture Design

At Deszine Talks, the Jørgen Bækmark collection represents the most principled strand of Danish modernism a tradition in which the designer’s first obligation is not to novelty or self-expression but to the person who will live with the furniture. Bækmark (1920–2003) belongs to a generation of Danish designers who were formed by Kaare Klint’s school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and who carried Klint’s functionalist values proportion derived from the human body, materials chosen for their intrinsic qualities, construction conceived for longevity into a democratic context: furniture that could be produced at scale, sold at accessible prices, and still be beautiful, durable, and formally resolved.

Born in 1920, Bækmark trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and subsequently under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy. Klint’s influence was decisive: it instilled in Bækmark a belief that furniture design was not an art form in which the designer’s personality was the primary subject, but a discipline in which the designer’s personality was most properly expressed through the quality of thinking applied to functional problems. How should a seat be shaped to support the lumbar region? How should a backrest angle to allow the shoulders to relax? How should a frame be jointed to distribute load without redundant material? These were the questions that interested Bækmark, and he spent a career of more than four decades answering them with consistent, undemonstrative brilliance.

His longest and most important association was with FDB Møbler the furniture division of the Danish Consumer Cooperative Society, founded with an explicit mission to bring well-designed furniture to ordinary Danish households at prices they could afford. FDB Møbler had been the context in which Borge Mogensen developed some of his most important early work in the 1940s, and Bækmark continued in the same tradition: designing pieces that were structurally honest, formally coherent, and entirely free of the decorative elaboration that would have added cost without adding value. His FDB pieces were not stripped-down versions of more ambitious designs; they were complete and resolved designs whose ambition was precisely this restraint.

Bækmark’s later work, produced for manufacturers including France & Søn and Erik Ole Jørgensen, extended his formal vocabulary into upholstered territory without sacrificing the structural clarity that characterised his earliest work. His upholstered pieces have the same quality as his wood-frame furniture: every element is there because it needs to be, and its form is the most elegant solution to the problem it addresses. There is nothing superfluous, nothing decorative in the pejorative sense, and nothing that has not been thought through to its conclusion.

    Signature Pieces in This Collection

    • JB1 Easy Chair - Bækmark’s most celebrated design and one of the most quietly authoritative easy chairs in the Danish modern canon. The JB1 is a study in the minimum: a solid wood frame of precisely calibrated proportions, a seat and backrest upholstered in leather or fabric, and four tapered legs whose geometry distributes the load of the chair with structural logic made visible. There is no decorative element that is not also a structural one; there is no material present that is not earning its place. The seat height, seat depth, backrest angle, and armrest height are all calibrated to the human body with the precision that Bækmark inherited from Klint the result is a chair that is immediately comfortable without any adjustment period and that remains comfortable over hours of sitting. In leather, it develops a patina over years of use that makes each piece a record of the life lived in it.
    • JB3 Sofa - The sofa companion to the JB1, sharing the same frame language and upholstery specification at the two- and three-seater scale. The JB3 is one of those rare sofas that achieves genuine visual coherence at all widths the proportions do not become awkward or heavy as the seating surface extends, because the frame geometry and the cushion specification have been worked out from first principles rather than adapted from a single-seat template. The back cushions are removable and reversible for even wear and extended longevity. In a room with the JB1, the two pieces form a complete seating arrangement of entirely consistent formal language one of the most satisfying combinations in the Danish modern tradition.
    • FDB M71 Chair - One of Bækmark’s FDB Møbler designs, the M71 is a solid beech dining and occasional chair whose back a gentle horizontal slat supported between two uprights is the most restrained possible version of a supported backrest. The seat is hand-woven in natural paper cord or rush, in the tradition of democratic Danish craft furniture. The M71 was designed to be produced in quantity at affordable cost, and yet it has a formal completeness that many much more expensive chairs do not achieve: every line is in the right place, every dimension correct, and the whole is greater than the sum of its completely ordinary parts.
    • FDB M72 Rocking Chair - The rocking chair variant of the M71 family, the M72 adds solid wood rockers to the M71’s frame in a way that is structurally and formally seamless the rockers appear not as an addition but as a natural extension of the chair’s leg geometry. In a natural wood finish, the M72 is one of the warmest and most domestic pieces in the Bækmark catalogue a chair that communicates comfort through its posture before the sitter has made contact with the seat.
    • FDB Side & Dining Tables -Bækmark’s table designs for FDB Møbler share the formal vocabulary of his chairs: solid beech or oak frames with tapered legs, tabletops in solid wood or laminate specified for their visual weight relative to the base, and joinery details that are visible and honest rather than concealed and complex. They are designed to be used, repaired, and passed on furniture whose longevity is built into every structural decision.
    • Cushions & Accessories - Leather and fabric cushions selected to complement the precise, restrained upholstery geometry of Bækmark’s frames adding warmth and seasonal adaptability without disrupting the formal discipline that each piece embodies.

The Klint Tradition: Proportion, Function, Longevity

To understand Bækmark’s furniture, it is necessary to understand Kaare Klint the architect and designer who, more than any other individual, shaped the character of Danish furniture design in the 20th century. Klint’s starting point was always the human body: he measured people sitting, standing, reaching, and reclining, and derived from those measurements the dimensional standards that should govern seat heights, back angles, shelf depths, and handle positions. He was, in the most literal sense, an ergonomist before that word existed in design discourse, and he believed that any piece of furniture that was not calibrated to these measurements was not merely impractical but formally incomplete because its proportions were arbitrary rather than derived.

Bækmark absorbed this discipline completely and applied it across every scale of his work, from a dining chair to a sofa to a side table. The result is furniture whose comfort is not accidental it is the output of a systematic investigation of how the human body rests, and it manifests as dimensions that are exactly right rather than approximately right. This is the quality that makes Bækmark’s pieces feel immediately familiar and comfortable to people who have never sat in them before: the body recognises the correctness of the proportions before the mind has time to articulate it.

Klint’s second principle longevity through material honesty is equally present in Bækmark’s work. His wood-frame pieces use solid beech and oak rather than engineered composites, jointed in ways that allow repair and restoration rather than replacement. His upholstered pieces use top-grain leather and durable woven fabrics that age gracefully rather than cheaply. This is furniture conceived not for a five-year product cycle but for a lifetime of use and, where appropriate, a second lifetime in the hands of the next generation.

Why Deszine Talks for Jørgen Bækmark?

    • ✓ Faithful to Klint’s proportional discipline seat heights, back angles, and depths calibrated to the human body
    • ✓ Solid beech and oak frames jointed for repair and longevity, not engineered for replacement
    • ✓ Top-grain leather and durable woven fabric upholstery specified to age gracefully over decades
    • ✓ Reversible and replaceable cushion construction for multi-decade longevity
    • ✓ Suitable for residential, hospitality, and considered contract environments

How to Style Jørgen Bækmark in Your Interior

The JB1 and JB3 form a complete seating arrangement in the same formal language position them together in an open-plan living area with a Carpet in a natural flatwoven fibre to anchor the composition. The FDB M71 in multiples is ideal around a dining surface or Study Table, where its simple horizontal back and solid wood frame will complement a wide range of tabletop finishes without creating visual conflict.

Layer with Leather Cushions on the JB1 for additional warmth, and add Fabric Cushions to the JB3 for seasonal softness. Place the M72 Rocking Chair beside a window or in a reading corner, where its domestic warmth is most effective. A Mirror on an adjacent wall will amplify the quiet spatial confidence of any Bækmark arrangement, and a Bench in a compatible wood finish will bridge the seating layer with the broader room.

Jørgen Bækmark’s Klint-rooted functionalism finds its closest companion in the structural honesty of Børge Mogensen, who worked in the same FDB Møbler tradition before Bækmark and shared the same belief in democratic, enduring design. The handcraft authority of Hans J. Wegner represents the cabinetmaker’s answer to the same functionalist questions. The quiet precision of Erik Magnussen and the organic ambition of Erik Ole Jørgensen offer different resolutions of what Danish modern design can achieve.
