Born in Aalborg, Denmark, Mogensen trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and later under the legendary Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Klint's influence was decisive: he taught his students to begin not with aesthetics but with function to study how human beings actually live, move, and use the objects around them. Mogensen took this discipline further than almost anyone. He spent years measuring everyday objects books, bottles, folded textiles to understand the precise dimensions that furniture needed to serve real life. The result was a body of work that feels effortless precisely because it is so thoroughly considered.

He was also a democratic designer decades before the word was fashionable. As head of design at the Danish Co-operative Society (FDB) from 1942, he dedicated nearly a decade to creating high-quality, affordable furniture for ordinary Danish households work that reached more homes than any other Danish designer of his generation. Mogensen's material choices were never arbitrary. He worked almost exclusively with solid hardwoods oak, beech, and teak selected for their structural integrity and their capacity to age visibly and beautifully. His leathers were thick, vegetable-tanned hides that develop a patina over decades of use, growing richer and more characterful with every year. He regarded this ageing as a feature, not a flaw: furniture, in his view, should carry the story of the life lived around it.

He was also meticulous about joinery. Mogensen's frames are held together with mortise-and-tenon joints and wood screws rather than glue alone a construction method that allows individual components to be repaired or replaced rather than rendering the entire piece disposable when one element fails.
