Arne Jacobsen - The Architect Who Redefined How the World Sits
At Deszine Talks, the Arne Jacobsen collection is among the most requested and for good reason. Jacobsen (1902–1971) was Denmark's most consequential designer of the 20th century, a trained architect whose eye for total environments extended seamlessly from building facades down to the door handles within them. His furniture was never decorative afterthought — it was architecture at human scale.
Born in Copenhagen, Jacobsen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1927. He was deeply influenced by the early modernism of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, yet he developed a distinctly organic, humanistic approach one that embraced the warmth of natural materials and the elegance of fluid, sculptural form. His furniture pieces are not just design icons: they are benchmarks of what happens when architecture, craft, and ergonomics converge without compromise.
From the sweeping, enveloping curves of the Egg Chair to the democratic simplicity of the Series 7 a chair that has sold over seven million units worldwide every Jacobsen design carries a singular authority. These are pieces that do not shout for attention. They earn it quietly, every time someone sits down.
Signature Pieces in This Collection
- Egg Chair - Designed in 1958 for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg is Jacobsen's most celebrated work. Its high-sided, cocoon-like shell upholstered in supple leather or premium fabric creates a private world within any room. Mounted on a four-pronged swivel base of polished aluminium, it pivots effortlessly while remaining anchored in presence. A true centerpiece for any interior.
- Swan Chair & Sofa - Conceived alongside the Egg for the Royal Hotel, the Swan's absence of rear legs was revolutionary. Its continuous shell curves upward and outward, supported on a central pedestal base that allows full rotation. Smaller than the Egg, yet equally bold, the Swan is perfectly suited to lounges, reading corners, and reception spaces.
- Series 7 Chair - Introduced in 1955, the Series 7 (Model 3107) is the world's best-selling chair. A masterclass in pressed plywood technology, its single-form shell distributes weight with ergonomic precision while demanding remarkably little visual space. Available across the widest range of finishes and upholstery, it is the democratic chair at home in a boardroom, a café, or a Scandinavian kitchen.
- Ant Chair - Jacobsen's 1952 breakthrough, the Ant was one of the first chairs to be pressed from a single sheet of moulded plywood. Its narrow waist which gave the chair its insect nickname was a technical necessity that became a design signature. Lightweight, stackable, and endlessly versatile.
- Drop Chair - Originally designed for the Royal Hotel but never used in the final scheme, the Drop Chair was rediscovered and put into production decades later. Its teardrop shell, set on a swivel pedestal, is softer and more approachable than the Egg an ideal accent chair for bedrooms and intimate spaces.
- Chair Cushions & Accessories - Precision-cut seat pads and cushions designed to complement Jacobsen's plywood shell chairs, restoring softness without compromising the silhouette.
The Design Philosophy Behind Every Piece
Jacobsen worked at every scale from urban masterplans to textile patterns but his furniture is where his philosophy is most legible. He believed in total design: the idea that every element of an environment, from the architecture to the ashtray, should speak the same visual language. This is why his chairs feel so resolved. They were never designed in isolation. They were conceived as part of a whole, and they carry that certainty into any room they inhabit.
He was also a meticulous materialist. Jacobsen specified upholstery weights, leather grades, and base finishes with the same rigour that he applied to structural concrete. The result is furniture that rewards close attention surfaces that age beautifully, joints that remain precise after decades of daily use, and proportions that never feel dated because they were never fashionable to begin with.

How to Style Arne Jacobsen in Your Interior
The Egg and Swan command space position them as focal anchors in a living room or reading alcove, ideally against a plain wall or beside a floor lamp that allows the silhouette to read clearly. Pair with a low-profile Sofa in a complementary leather tone, and ground the arrangement with a Carpet in a natural, undyed weave.
The Series 7 and Ant chairs are inherently social stack them around a Study Table or dining surface, or deploy them individually as accent seating wherever the room needs a moment of considered lightness. Add Leather Cushions for tactile warmth and to unify the colour story across pieces.

Born in Värnamo into a family of master craftsmen, Mathsson transformed that conviction into a body of work that redefined 20th-century seating.
Each piece in this collection draws from that legacy ergonomic profiles, honest materials, and the kind of quiet confidence that only true Scandinavian craftsmanship can deliver.

Børge Mogensen - The Master of Honest, Enduring Danish Craft
At Deszine Talks, the Børge Mogensen collection stands for something increasingly rare in contemporary interiors: furniture made with absolute honesty. Mogensen (1914–1972) was not interested in spectacle. He believed that a chair should be a chair structurally truthful, materially generous, and built to last longer than the generation that bought it. In an era of disposable design, this collection is a deliberate act of permanence.
Born in Aalborg, Denmark, Mogensen trained as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and later under the legendary Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Klint's influence was decisive: he taught his students to begin not with aesthetics but with function to study how human beings actually live, move, and use the objects around them. Mogensen took this discipline further than almost anyone. He spent years measuring everyday objects books, bottles, folded textiles to understand the precise dimensions that furniture needed to serve real life. The result was a body of work that feels effortless precisely because it is so thoroughly considered.
He was also a democratic designer decades before the word was fashionable. As head of design at the Danish Co-operative Society (FDB) from 1942, he dedicated nearly a decade to creating high-quality, affordable furniture for ordinary Danish households work that reached more homes than any other Danish designer of his generation. But it is his later, more architecturally resolved pieces the Spanish Chair, the Spokeback Sofa, the Hunting Chair that have endured as the defining expressions of his genius.
Signature Pieces in This Collection
- Spanish Chair (Model 2226) - Designed in 1958 after a trip to Spain, the Spanish Chair is Mogensen's most iconic work and one of the most distinctive seats in the entire canon of 20th-century design. Thick, saddle-stitched natural leather straps suspend the seat and backrest independently within a solid oak frame, allowing a gentle flex that no rigid upholstery can replicate. The visual weight is deliberate this is furniture that acknowledges its own physicality. It does not pretend to be delicate, and it is more beautiful for it. Place one in a room and the room acquires a gravity it did not have before.
- Spokeback Sofa (Model 2254) - Introduced in 1945 and refined over subsequent years, the Spokeback Sofa takes its name from the vertical spindles that form the backrest a structural detail drawn from traditional English Windsor chair-making that Mogensen adapted for the Danish context. The solid beech or oak frame is left fully exposed; the upholstery, in leather or fabric, is kept taut and flat, respecting the geometry of the frame beneath it. It is a sofa that rewards the eye the longer you look at it.
- Hunting Chair (Model 2229) - Designed in collaboration with his close friend Hans Wegner, the Hunting Chair folds completely flat, making it one of the most elegant portable seating solutions in the history of Scandinavian design. Its canvas or leather sling seat and backrest are paired with a solid oak frame that locks into a rigid, stable configuration when open. The design is a meditation on the relationship between structure and surface the frame does the work, the sling provides the comfort.
- Model 2213 Three-Seater Sofa - Mogensen's 1962 modular sofa system remains one of the most intelligent approaches to upholstered seating ever conceived. Deep cushions in leather or fabric sit within a simple, rectilinear solid wood frame. The cushions are reversible and replaceable a practical decision that dramatically extends the lifespan of the piece. Wide armrests double as side tables. It is furniture designed for how people actually live: sprawling, reading, hosting, and staying.
- J39 People's Chair - Designed in 1947 as part of his FDB work, the J39 is Mogensen's most democratic piece. Its woven paper cord seat, solid beech frame, and four-legged simplicity make it one of the most produced Danish chairs in history. Light, stackable, and endlessly adaptable equally at home at a dining table, a desk, or a kitchen island.
- Cushions & Accessories - Seat pads, leather cushions, and fabric cushions selected to complement the geometry and material palette of Mogensen's frames, adding warmth without obscuring the structural honesty beneath.
The Philosophy of Honest Materials
Mogensen's material choices were never arbitrary. He worked almost exclusively with solid hardwoods oak, beech, and teak selected for their structural integrity and their capacity to age visibly and beautifully. His leathers were thick, vegetable-tanned hides that develop a patina over decades of use, growing richer and more characterful with every year. He regarded this ageing as a feature, not a flaw: furniture, in his view, should carry the story of the life lived around it.
He was also meticulous about joinery. Mogensen's frames are held together with mortise-and-tenon joints and wood screws rather than glue alone a construction method that allows individual components to be repaired or replaced rather than rendering the entire piece disposable when one element fails. This is furniture built for the long arc of a life, not a lease cycle.
Why Deszine Talks for Børge Mogensen?
- ✓ True to Mogensen's structural and material vocabulary solid hardwood frames, honest joinery
- ✓ Thick, durable leather and robust fabric upholstery selected for multi-decade longevity
- ✓ Proportions faithful to original drawings not scaled, not simplified
- ✓ Pieces that work as statement anchors or quiet background furniture depending on placement
- ✓ Curated for design integrity, material quality, and everyday durability
How to Style Børge Mogensen in Your Interior
The Spanish Chair is a statement piece that requires space to breathe position it beside a window or at the end of a sofa arrangement, with at least 60cm of clearance on either side so the frame can be read in full. Its natural leather ages into warm amber tones that pair beautifully with undyed linen, rough plaster walls, and wide-plank oak floors. Add a Carpet in a natural weave beneath the grouping to anchor it without competing.
The Spokeback Sofa and Model 2213 work in longer, more relaxed arrangements pair with a low Bench as a coffee table alternative, or layer with Leather Cushions and Fabric Cushions to build tonal warmth. The J39 People's Chair, used in multiples around a Study Table or dining surface, creates an effortless Scandinavian dining scene without effort or affectation.

Carl Malmsten - The Soul of Swedish Furniture Making
At Deszine Talks, the Carl Malmsten collection represents something singular in Scandinavian design: a tradition that chose handcraft over industrialisation, and chose it deliberately, at the very moment when the rest of Europe was racing toward the machine. Malmsten (1888–1972) was Sweden's most celebrated furniture designer and one of the most consequential voices in 20th-century Nordic craft not despite his resistance to modernist dogma, but because of it.
Born in Stockholm, Malmsten trained in furniture making and woodworking before establishing his own studio in 1917. His early recognition came swiftly and unambiguously: at just 29, he won first and second prize in the competition to furnish Stockholm City Hall one of Sweden's most prestigious civic commissions beating established names and announcing himself as a designer of rare originality. Yet unlike many prize-winners, Malmsten did not use his success as a platform for self-promotion. He used it as a foundation for something more durable: a school, a workshop tradition, and a body of furniture that placed the hand of the maker at the centre of every decision.
In 1930, when Swedish modernism was cresting at the Stockholm Exhibition a watershed moment for functionalism and industrial design Malmsten stood apart. He was not opposed to comfort or beauty; he was opposed to furniture stripped of the human qualities that made it worth living with. Where the modernists prized reproducibility, Malmsten prized irreproducibility: the slight variation in grain, the hand-planed surface, the joint shaped by a craftsman who understood both the wood and the purpose of the piece.
He founded the Carl Malmsten School of Furniture-Making in Linköping in 1930, later expanding to Stockholm, institutionalising his belief that design and making were inseparable disciplines. His students went on to shape Swedish furniture culture for generations. Today, his pieces remain in production, handcrafted in Sweden using the same species of wood, the same joinery methods, and the same upholstery traditions that Malmsten himself specified a continuity almost unparalleled in Scandinavian design history.
Signature Pieces in This Collection
- Liten Lova Armchair - One of Malmsten's most enduring designs, the Liten Lova (“Little Lova”) is a compact upholstered armchair built on a solid birch frame with slightly flared legs and a gently reclined backrest shaped precisely to the lumbar curve. The upholstery typically in a natural linen, wool, or leather is kept simple and taut, allowing the woodwork to remain visible and legible. It is a chair that rewards daily use: the frame is dimensioned for hours of comfortable sitting, and the materials are selected to age with dignity. An ideal reading chair, a considered bedroom accent, or a quiet counterpoint to a larger sofa arrangement.
- Lspão / Lspädan Sofa - Malmsten’s upholstered sofas are distinguished by their solid wood frames birch or cherry that remain fully exposed at the legs, arms, and side rails, maintaining a visual connection to the material beneath the upholstery. The cushions are generously proportioned without being shapeless, and the frame’s proportions keep the overall silhouette grounded and readable. These are sofas designed to anchor a room without dominating it.
- Visingö Bench - Named after the island of Visingö in Lake Vättern, this bench is among the most recognisable pieces in the Malmsten catalogue. Its solid birch frame, gently curved seat rail, and turned or tapered legs carry the sensibility of Swedish folk furniture translated into a refined, contemporary vocabulary. Used at the foot of a bed, along an entry hall, or as occasional seating in a living room, the Visingö is one of those rare pieces that looks entirely natural in almost any context.
- Birgitta Chair - A dining and occasional chair of exceptional structural elegance, the Birgitta combines a solid wood frame with a woven or upholstered seat and a high, slightly curved backrest that provides genuine lumbar support. Its proportions are generous without being heavy, and its turned details characteristic of Malmsten’s debt to the Swedish craft tradition give it a warmth that purely rectilinear chairs cannot achieve. Equally at home at a dining table or standing alone as an accent piece.
- Övralid Daybed - Named after the estate in Östergötland where Malmsten maintained his summer studio, the Övralid is a low, wide daybed with a solid birch frame, a thick upholstered mattress, and a backrest that can be adjusted or removed entirely. Generous in scale and serene in character, it is the piece in the Malmsten catalogue most closely associated with his belief that furniture should invite rest not merely permit it.
- Cushions & Upholstery Accessories - Natural linen, wool, and leather cushions and seat pads selected to complement the warm wood tones and craft sensibility of Malmsten’s frames. Add tactile warmth and seasonal flexibility without compromising the structural clarity of each piece.
Wood, Craft, and the Passage of Time
Malmsten worked primarily in Swedish birch, cherry, and pine species chosen not for fashion but for character. Birch, in particular, was central to his practice: its tight, even grain takes hand-planing exceptionally well, its pale tone warms over time toward honey and amber, and its hardness makes it resistant to the dents and scratches that afflict softer woods. Malmsten’s frames were always dimensioned generously he distrusted the slender profiles that modernism favoured, believing that thinness in a frame communicated fragility whether or not it was actually present.
His joinery methods mortise-and-tenon, dowelled, hand-fitted were inherited from the cabinetmaking tradition he trained in and taught throughout his life. The result is furniture that, unlike most mass-produced alternatives, can be disassembled, repaired, and re-upholstered rather than discarded when a component fails. Several pieces that left Malmsten’s Stockholm showroom in the 1940s and 1950s are still in daily use today, having been re-covered once or twice but otherwise unchanged.
His upholstery choices reflected the same philosophy: natural fibres linen, wool, cotton that breathe, soften with use, and develop the kind of subtle surface variation that synthetic materials never achieve. When he specified leather, it was always vegetable-tanned and full-grain, chosen to develop a patina that synthetic or corrected-grain leathers cannot replicate.
Why Deszine Talks for Carl Malmsten?
- ✓ Faithful to Malmsten’s material vocabulary solid birch, cherry, and natural upholstery
- ✓ Hand-craft sensibility preserved in every frame detail and upholstery finish
- ✓ Proportions drawn from original specifications never scaled or simplified for production economy
- ✓ Upholstery in natural linen, wool, and full-grain leather that ages beautifully over decades
- ✓ Curated for design integrity, material quality, and a lifetime of everyday use
How to Style Carl Malmsten in Your Interior
Malmsten’s pieces are most at home in interiors that do not try too hard. Pale plaster walls, wide-plank floors in untreated oak or pine, linen curtains in off-white or warm grey these are the settings where his birch frames and natural upholstery find their fullest expression. The Liten Lova and Birgitta chairs work beautifully in pairs, flanking a fireplace or anchoring a reading corner. Layer with Leather Cushions in cognac or natural tan to introduce warmth without disrupting the tonal calm.
The Visingsö Bench is one of the most versatile pieces in the collection use it at the foot of a bed, along an entrance hall, or as a low surface beside a Sofa in place of a coffee table. Ground any Malmsten arrangement with a Carpet in a flatwoven natural fibre, and complete the picture with a Mirror or two to amplify the light that pale birch naturally reflects.
