  At Deszine Talks, the Nanna Ditzel collection stands apart. Where the Danish modern tradition is most often characterised by restraint by the careful subordination of form to function, by the suppression of the decorative impulse in favour of structural honesty Ditzel (1923–2005) represented something genuinely different: a designer of the same rigorous Danish formation who chose to let form lead, who trusted colour and scale and organic geometry in ways that her contemporaries rarely did, and who produced a body of work that is simultaneously among the most distinctively personal and the most universally appealing in the entire Scandinavian design canon.

  Born in Copenhagen in 1923, Nanna Ditzel trained at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and subsequently at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts the same institutions that formed Wegner, Jacobsen, and Mogensen. But where those designers moved primarily into furniture in solid wood and metal, Ditzel’s practice ranged freely across furniture, textiles, jewellery, and exhibition design, and her furniture specifically engaged with materials rattan, moulded fibreglass, wicker, rope, and later powder-coated steel that her contemporaries largely ignored. This breadth was not restlessness; it was the expression of a formal curiosity that found different materials to be differently capable of producing the organic, body-responsive forms that interested her most.

  Her early career was shaped by her partnership with her husband Jørgen Ditzel, with whom she collaborated until his death in 1961. Their joint practice produced some of the most celebrated furniture of the 1950s, including the first suspended hanging chair the piece that would later be known as the Hanging Chair or the “Egg of Columbus” which appeared in 1959 and was so formally unexpected that it redefined what a chair could be. After Jørgen’s death, Nanna continued her practice independently, spending periods in England working in graphic and exhibition design before returning to Denmark and resuming furniture work with renewed formal confidence.   Ditzel received the Lunning Prize in 1956 the most prestigious award in Scandinavian design at that time, shared that year with Finn Juhl and the Danish Design Council’s lifetime achievement award in 1999.   Born in Copenhagen in 1903, Wanscher trained as a cabinetmaker and subsequently studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts the decisive intellectual formation that shaped his entire career. Where most of Klint's students drew on historical sources as a formal vocabulary, Wanscher went directly to the sources themselves to the curule chairs of ancient Rome, to the Egyptian folding stools of the New Kingdom, to the splat-back chairs of Thomas Chippendale and the elegant proportions of the English Regency. He studied these not as stylistic references but as structural and ergonomic arguments: evidence of how the problems of seating had been solved across millennia.

  Wanscher succeeded Klint as professor of furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy in 1955, a position he held until 1973. His academic work included two major books The Art of Furniture (1966) and Furniture Types (1932) that remain among the most rigorous surveys of the subject in any language. He was not a designer who happened to be interested in history; he was a historian who happened also to design.

  His primary manufacturing partner was the cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen, with whom he worked from the early 1940s through the 1970s.
